In the world today there are close to 15 million refugees and asylum seekers living outside their countries of origin. Only 16 countries offer permanent resettlement.

Many Iraqis Christians have fled Iraq as a result of the war in Iraq and the subsequent persecution of Christians. The National Initiative to Boost the Private Sponsorship Program, initiated by the Archdiocese of Toronto is aimed at increasing the number of parishes that sponsor refugees. To this end St. Luke's has formed a Refugee Resettlement Committee to facilitate the sponsorship of an Iraqi refugee family.
