St. Luke's Parish participates in an interfaith program called the MOSAIC INTERFAITH OUT OF THE COLD. Overnight shelters are operated by various faith communities on different nights of the week during November to March. St. Luke's provides food and shelter on Thursday nights (December – February). The program offers dinner, a place to sleep for the night, and a hot breakfast to the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. While we recognize that this does not solve the problem of homelessness and poverty we try to reduce the harm these problems cause. We want to follow Christ's teaching that we should help who are in need. "Just as you did it to one of the least of those who are members of my family, you did it to me." (Matt. 14;40)
The Out of the Cold Program is a program run by volunteers from the parish. This program also receives funding from York Region. Join the 80+ parishioners who volunteer their time, typically for 5 Thursdays per year. The tasks required range from cooking and serving meals, to providing a warm welcome, safety supervision, distributing clothing or simply being attentive to the guests. Parishioners can also contribute donations of clothing, food, and kitchen supplies.
Each Fall, typically during October, there is an announcement requesting volunteers to sign at the back of the Church. Please speak to one of the sign-up volunteers about which role may be most suitable for you.
For more information on how to become involved, please contact Natalie Doucet at the parish office (905-881-2786 Ext.235)
